When Did The New Orleans Saints Participate In The Super Bowl?
The Super Bowl is the championship game from the National Football League (NFL), the premier association of professional American Football. It was first played on January 15th, 1967 as part of a merger agreement involving the NFL and its then-rival league, the American Football League (AFL). It was settled that the 2 leagues’ champion teams should play in an AFL versus NFL World Championship Game until the merger was consummated in 1970. Following the merger, every league became a conference, and the game was then played between conference champions.
The Super Bowl uses Roman numerals in order to classify every game, as compared with the year during which it’s held. Super Bowl I was played in 1967 to find out the champions of the regular season played in 1966, and Super Bowl XLIV was played on February 7th, 2010 to determine the champion of the 2009 regular season.
The New Orleans Saints are a professional American football team centered in New Orleans, Louisiana. They are the current champions of the National Football League (NFL) and play in the South Division within the National Football Conference (NFC).
The Saints had been established in 1967 as an expansion team and played their domicile games at Tulane Stadium throughout the 1974 season. They went more than a decade before they managed to end a season with a .500 achievement, 20 years previous to having a winning season, and over 4 decades before getting to the Super Bowl. The team’s first successful years had been from 1987-1992, when the team made the playoffs four times and had winning records in the non-playoff seasons. In the 2000 season, the Saints defeated the then-defending Super Bowl champion St. Louis Rams for the teams first playoff win.
The Saints reached the NFC Championship Game in the 2006 season but lost 39-14 against the Chicago Bears. They repeated this feat in their most successful season in 2009, but would win the game and their first conference championship that sent them to their first Super Bowl appearance. At Super Bowl XLIV, the Saints won the city of New Orleans its first league championship, beating the Indianapolis Colts 31-17. On September 17th 1967 the Saints took the field for their first regular season game in front of 80,879 fans at ancient Tulane Stadium. The Saints got things going with a bang as rookie running back John Gilliam returned the opening kickoff ninety four yards for a touchdown. Nonetheless the Saints would lose the inaugural game to the Los Angeles Rams 27-13. The Saints wouldn’t win their first game till November 5th once they defeated the Philadelphia Eagles, 31-24, thanks to Walt Roberts scoring 3 touchdowns. The Saints would finally end up their first season with a 3-11 record.
