Once you understand how diamonds are created it becomes easy to understand why they are so admired and valued. First, enough heat and pressure over a long period of time is necessary to form the carbon into a brilliant diamond, but the diamond is still about ninety miles beneath the surface of the earth. The gems that work their way to the surface do so with the help of volcanoes. They are picked up by magma as it climbs up to the surface through channels and they are left near the surface.

This whole process can take thousands to millions of years and it isn’t an easy trip for the diamonds. But this isn’t the only reason these precious gems are so cherished, their exceptional beauty and strength is what has actually made them as respected as they are. The way they sparkle in the light when they are well cut puts them above all other gemstones. They way in which refract light makes them very vibrant and distinct. As if that isn’t enough they are also extremely durable, they truly are forever making them the ideal stone for symbolic jewelry like wedding rings.

It seems as if diamonds have been treasured ever since they were identified and they will continue to be hot well into the future, probably forever. The one thing that seems to vary is the manner in which they are used depending on the cultural trend at the given moment. The greatest use of them during our time is for engagement rings, although even this is shifting a little. The traditional engagement ring has a white diamond but more recent movements include the use of a colored stone for these important occasions, like chocolate diamond jewelry.

Along with this movement to natural colored diamonds there has been increasing interest in uncut diamonds. This version doesn’t exhibit the sparkle of the polished version, rather it possess a distinct, rustic beauty. The environmental movement may be influencing jewelry trends taking us back to the basics or it may be the normal progression of the jewelry industry. Either way it offers a fun variety in the world of jewelry.
