Neem buyers- How to shop for quality neem products
Looking for neem? Have you ever been looking to buy good quality neem products but could not figure out where to begin? Neem based products are getting more attention these days and are being made available, but as of now are mostly only found on the internet or in health shops and specialty stores. These products are not easy to find, so it is easy to grab the first thing you find on the shelf just because it says neem on the bottle. Here are some quick tips that will help you choose wisely before purchasing the wrong stuff.
Find Out How The Neem Oil Was Removed From The Neem Seeds There are a few different methods used to extract the neem oil from the neem tree seeds. As you might have already concluded, not all extraction process were created equally. The extraction process that produces the highest quality neem seed oil is called cold pressing. Cold pressing neem oil is the best, as the majority of the active compounds remain intact. Cold pressing is also the first and most accepted method of extraction. It is done with a mechanical device that squeezes the oil out of the seeds. Always make sure to buy only cold pressed neem oil where possible.
Another method uses hot water vapor and high pressure. Though this technique retrieves a larger quantity of oil from the neem seeds than cold pressing, a lot of the active compounds in the neem oil can possibly be destroyed by the heat used in the process.
The third extraction method is the most preferred one that most manufacturers use because it gets the most oil. The method is called solvent extraction, and in most cases hexane (white gasoline) is the solvent of choice. Though this method extracts just about all of the oil from the neem seeds, the chemicals destroy most of the active compounds in the neem seed oil. And along with this and the fact that the solvent is poisonous, it is preferable to look for products that do not contain neem oil that was extracted using them.
Be Sure The Products Do Not Contain Additives Almost all bath and cosmetic products these days contain chemicals to “enhance” them, so to speak. At the same time, some of these chemicals can likely cause adverse side effects. Two of the most common chemicals that may be in many of the products are Lauryl Sulfates (SLS) and Parabens. SLS’s are often used as foam producers, because they are cheap and work very well. The majority of inexpensive neem pet shampoo products have many of these additives as well. But, these chemicals have proven to cause allergic reactions in some people. The US Food and Drug Administration encourages manufacturers not to use them.
Parabens are often used for preserving, and though there has been no real studies showing that that they are potentially harmful, they are becoming more and more controversial. Some organizations feel they should be avoided in order to err on the side of safety.
Be Sure To Look For Certified Organic Ingredients For obvious reasons, organic ingredients are always more desireable than ones that are not. These are natural substances, and have not been exposed to potentially dangerous chemical compounds, synthetic fertilizers, or other un-natural substances. Look for labels that list certified organic ingredients. If a vendor uses organic ingredients, they will almost always state this selling point on the label.
