Falling disposable income means less protection

Responding to research by Abbey Credit Cards claiming that British citizens have seen their disposable income fall by nearly 30% during the past two years, Debt Advisers Direct have warned that the squeeze on incomes could become tighter in the coming months, and have advised consumers to take care of any financial issues, especially outstanding debts, as soon as possible.

According to the research, the average household now has only 25% - around £382 – of their monthly income left after essential costs such as mortgage payments and energy bills have been paid.

That figure is down from £541 in disposable income available to British households just two years ago – a 29% fall.

The research also claims that one in ten spend 90% of their income on bills and other essential costs, leaving only 10% as disposable income.

On average, British households were spending 7.4% of their total income on repaying debts, not including mortgages, the research claimed.

Meanwhile, an average 24% went towards mortgage or rent payments, 17% on household bills, 16% on food, and 8% on transport costs.

British incomes have been put under pressure on two fronts throughout the economic crisis, with costs of living such as energy bills and food prices rising rapidly, and the credit crunch limiting access to additional funds in the form of loans and mortgages.

The effects have been tangible, with overall retail sales gradually declining over the year, and profits for ‘budget stores’ increasing – a sign that consumers’ perceived priorities are shifting as their disposable incomes shrink.

An expert from Debt Advisers Direct said: “Many people consider disposable income a luxury that can be spent on ‘unnecessary’ items, but it’s important to remember that disposable income is also a very important buffer against unexpected rises in outgoings.

“For example, if someone depends on their car to get to work, and they have to pay for a £500 repair with only £200 disposable income, that person could be forced into debt in order to make ends meet. That’s why it’s important for people to minimise their outgoings, and make savings where possible.

“The overall situation has become worse over the past year because costs of living, especially energy prices have risen so quickly. Food and other retail products are now falling in price, but energy prices have shown no sign of doing the same – and this continues to push more people towards debt.”

The Debt Advisers Direct spokesperson added that there are a number of debt solutions that can help to minimise outgoings when finances are limited.

“For people with multiple debts, a debt consolidation loan can be spread out across a longer period of time than the original debts, meaning monthly payments are lower,” she said. “Interest rates can also be reduced, especially when consolidating high-APR debts such as credit cards. However if the debt is repaid over a longer period, the additional interest from this can counteract some of the savings made.

“For debts that are becoming unmanageable, a debt management can help. It involves arranging to repay creditors in smaller amounts, based on how much the person in debt can afford, over a longer period of time.

“As always, we advise anyone looking to tackle their debts to seek professional debt advice beforehand.”

Javea - An Emerald in The Med

Javea is a coastal town, in the province of Alicante. It sits behind a bay between two rocky headlands, Cabo San Antonio and Cabo La Nao. Surrounded by orange, lemon and olive groves. The town is dominated by the Montgo peak, 753 metres high, declared a Natural Park in 1997. Javea has many aprtments and villas for sale at the moment. ( or as the Spanish would say, Apartamentos en Venta en Javea )

Montgo protects Javea from harsh north winds and it enjoys a micro-climate said to be one of the healthiest in the world. There are more recorded hours of sunshine than anywhere else in Spain making it popular with tourists and ex-pats alike. Which is why there are so many Villas For Sale in Javea ( Chalets en venta en Javea ). There is a population of about 32,000 people which swells to around 100,000 in the summer months.

Javea lies midway between the cities of Alicante and Valencia, which both have international airports and has good road connections to both via the N332  A road or the A7 motorway. There is also a regular bus service to the two cities as well as a daily service to Madrid. The nearest railway station is Gata de Gorgos, a ten minute drive away, with a regular service to Alicante.

Javea can be split into three distinct parts, all with properties for sale ( Propiedades en venta en Javea ):

The Old Town: once a walled and fortified town to protect it from pirates stone crosses now mark the original gates in three locations. In the centre of the town is the impressive church of Sant Bartolome which dates back to the 14th century although some of the structure may go back as far as the 11th century. The church suffered significant damage during the Spanish Civil War and shell and bullet holes can still be seen in some walls today.

There is an indoor market built in 1946 selling fruit, vegetables, meat and locally caught fish.

There is also a local museum, “Museo Historico y Etnografico Municipal J.B.Soler Blasco Javea”, which shows the history of Javea and can be visited between the hours of 10.00-13.00 and 17.00-20.00 and 10.00-13.00 weekends and bank holidays, but it is closed on Mondays.

The Port: popular with tourists due to its bars, restaurants, safe gravel beach and marina. The first jetty was built in 1871 and was important in the export of raisins. When the raisin trade collapsed at the end of the 19th century it became a fishing harbour which is how it remains today. There is also the landmark church “Nuestra Señora de Loreto” built in 1967, in the shape of a fishing boat going through the waves.

The Arenal:a wide beach of white sand with a promenade, bars and restaurants. There is an outdoor craft market during the summer as well as sand artists and street entertainers. There is also a Parador Hotel behind which once stood the “Punta del Arenal” a Roman settlement. On the other end of the bay once stood the Fontana Castle whose canons can still be seen outside the Sant Bartolome church in the old town.

Market day is on Thursday except when it is a bank holiday. There are three local fiestas, San Juan in June, Moors and Christians in July and Nuestra Señora de Loreto in September.

There is a large range of rental centres and shops catering to a wide range of activities including cycling, diving, fishing, golf, horse riding, sailing and hiking.

Fear Of High Diving Boards

When I was a little girl I loved going to the swimming pool each and every day of the summer. My mom was a single mom and she had to work, and that meant we spent our days with our babysitter. Her teenage daughter took us to the local pool each day and I would love to be there. In fact, there would be days when you could not get me out of the pool, and when it rained and we could not go swimming, I would be very disappointed. This went on for quite a few summers until my mom no longer needed to work all the time and we could stay home with her. Though I was a great swimmer, I was always scared of the diving board.

The pool in our town was small, but our town was small too. Though it was not the biggest one around, it was always clean, and when thinking about size versus cleanliness, I always prefer that something is clean. There were two diving boards there, and one large slide. The smaller diving board was only about four feet from the water, and though it took me a while, I finally go the courage up to use it. When it came to the large diving board however, well, that was a different story entirely. I was only eight then, and that board seemed to climb up into the sky.

It took me a long time to get the nerve up to climb up on the high diving board, and though thinking back, it was not even very big. I finally got up there one day, and had to climb back down. I never really considered myself to be afraid of heights because I loved to climb high up in trees. The thought of hurling myself down from that height was unthinkable. I love to be up high, but when I was in a tree, I never dreamed of jumping down, even when water was involved. However, this was just something I knew I needed to do, so I tried again.
